Technogym and IBM collaborate on ‘virtual coach’

With the rise of artificial intelligence (AI), we’re getting used to the idea of virtual personal assistants, like Amazon’s Alexa. Ut what if you had a virtual fitness coach too? That’s something that Italian fitness equipment supplier and computer giant IBM are working to realize. The two companies are hoping to develop an AI-driven “cognitive coaching platform” that can act as a personal trainer for the massive fitness, health and wellness market.

The idea is simple enough: a ‘human-like’ virtual coach that can combine data on people’s fitness goals, the weather, individual health metrics and diet to design personalized fitness plans, and communicate in natural language. It will ‘live’ in Technogym’s MyWellness platform, and interact with the user during workouts, updating information as it goes.

The potential market for such a service is enormous, and touches everyone from busy CEOs who can spare 15-minutes at lunch to professional gyms. As we move towards a connected world, the interest in virtual personal assistants and connected homes can be seen as indicative of consumers desire for AI services that can help simplify increasingly busy lives.

Nerio Alessandri, Technogym’s founder and CEO, said:

"Our goal has always been to offer our users a personalised training experience via connected equipment, services and content capable of interacting with them, understanding their deep motivation and needs – and delivering results. Our collaboration with IBM represents a further step towards the creation of increasingly customized and engaging training for our clients.”
