Take-Two CEO: the future of gaming is cross-platform

Strauss Zelnick, CEO of Take-Two Interactive (the Take-Two CEO: the future of gaming is cross-platform video game company behind blockbuster successes like Grand Theft Auto and Red Dead Redemption) says cross-platform functionality will be “a fixture” in gaming's future. By cross-platform, Zelnick means that gamers will be able to play the same games (as in literally play against one another) no matter what machines they are on. So your son could be playing Overwatch on his Playstation, and you could play against him on your PC. That's a huge development that could revolutionise gaming, and break down the final barriers between gamers.

Zelnick, speaking at the 27th annual Goldman Sachs Communacopia Conference, explained: "Eventually I think we will be in a cross-platform world, for a lot of titles. Certainly, between console and PC. The closed system walls are coming down, and they have to.”

Zelnick believes that cross-platform gaming will be an industry driver with more and more people playing games against each other online. And while platform barriers might make sense for the companies that make the consoles, they don't make sense for the people playing them. Gamers, ultimately want as much freedom as possible. In Zelnick's view, the long-term growth cross-platform functionality would provide would more than outweigh the impact it may have on sales of any single console - after all, a bigger, more connected, and more lucrative customer base should eventually benefit everyone in the industry.

Zelnick added: "Streaming is going to accelerate those walls coming down. We're all here for the consumers. If you're going to create rules that don't benefit the consumers but somehow you think benefit your enterprise, you're mistaken. Consumers will go elsewhere. You have to pay attention to what the consumer wants.”
