Spotify pushes personalisation into new territory with radio

What do Spotify users love about the platform? Loads of things – but one thing in particular stands out: the company’s incredibly powerful recommendations system. Listeners are presented with bespoke playlists on daily, weekly, and even seasonal bases, which curate both songs they’ve previously enjoyed and a mix of new stuff that Spotify thinks they’ll like. That’s something that Spotify share with the tech titans colonising the entertainment space, like Netflix and Amazon. And now, the company is pushing further down this line with a new update to its Premium tier membership plan.

Spotify’s latest update has rolled out a few new features – amongst them: easier navigation, and a better search page that is more focussed on introducing new music to listeners. But the biggest change is the introduction of a personalised radio channel for each user that is powered by exactly the same algorithms that have made its “Daily Mix” (amongst others) lists so popular.

In a blog post announcing the changes, Spotify wrote: “We’re always looking for ways to provide the best possible methods for people to discover and enjoy the music they love. That’s why, starting today, we're refreshing Spotify Premium to give our subscribers an even more personal and intuitive experience. These initial updates to Spotify Premium begin rolling out to all Premium subscribers on iOS and Android globally starting today, so get streaming.”

Explaining the new personalised offering, the post continued: “These offer an endless listening stream personalized to the listener’s own musical tastes. They’re updated regularly to keep things fresh—and what’s more, they’re even downloadable and available to play while offline.”
