Richemont owner demonstrates value of craftsmanship in Venice show
Johann Rupert, chairman of luxury giant Richemont, best known for brands like Cartier and Van Cleef & Arpels, is bringing luxury craftsmanship to Venice for an exhibition of artisanal skills. The exhibition, which will take up 4,000 square meters and is being organized by The Michelangelo Foundation, which Rupert set up to promote dying arts, will showcase “a myriad of objects including fine vases, contemporary art, bicycles, and the work of the world’s best Ferrari restorer.”

Rupert has previously warned of the threat to the luxury sector that is posed by robots and automation. As such, he has become a champion of human-led artisanal skills, arguing that great craftsmen cannot be adequately replaced. Last year, he set up The Michelangelo Foundation alongside Franco Cologni, a former Cartier executive, to promote the crafts they feared could die out.
The show will run for 16 days, the latter half of next September, and showcase artisans creating work in real time or through virtual reality. These include leatherwork, the construction of musical instruments, furniture and blown glass, and much more. Rupert hopes that the event will give Europe’s artists and designers an opportunity to network and gain visibility.
In a statement, Rupert defined his goals with the show: “The exhibit will provide a panoramic view of European fine craftsmanship. It will nevertheless have a singular undercurrent: what human beings can do better than machines.”
