Match CEO: What all online daters have in common
Mandy Ginsberg, CEO of online dating specialists Match Group, has spent a year in the industry’s top job. With a host of the world’s most popular ways to find love online – including Match.com, OkCupid, Tinder, and Hinge – the company is perfectly positioned to understand what drives the industry, and what users have in common with one another. Now, Ms. Ginsberg has revealed this key insight to the press.

Speaking last week at the Business Insider IGNITION 2018 in New York, Ginsberg joked “I’m the worst person to give dating advice. I’ve been married twice. The second time, I got a lot smarter, but still.” However, as CEO of Match, Ginsberg has had access to enough experience to notice something pretty strange – and, from an industry perspective, deeply important: “What we’ve found on a lot of our platforms is that what people want and what people say they want are two different things. For example, people would say in their profile, ‘I want somebody six-foot-tall and Jewish,’ but all of a sudden you start dating [someone completely different]. People often end up breaking their own criteria.”
According to Ginsberg, this makes sense in reference to her own life: “I was actually married to a 6’2” Jewish guy the first time around, but then I ended up with a very cute, short Indian guy. Sometimes you’d look at people in the real world and wonder, ‘that’s such an interesting couple. They clearly have chemistry, but I wouldn’t have seen them together.’ That happens on dating apps as well.”
Ginsberg says that the key for players in this industry that want to get ahead is cracking that mysterious code – and understanding what contributes to the chemistry between two people. With more than 10 million people across its dating apps and sites, no one has a better chance of figuring it out than Match.
