Mastercard becomes first global eSports sponsor through partnership with League of Legends

Cashless payment provider Mastercard has become the world’s first global eSports sponsor thanks to a multiyear deal with Riot Games which will see it become the exclusive payment service provider for popular title League of Legends. This is yet more proof of the extent to which eSports is capturing public attention, as Mastercard has taken similar positions in the past in a number of traditional sporting ventures, like the PGA tour and Major League Baseball.

Mastercard’s chief marketing and communications officer, Raja Rajamannar, made the following comment over the deal: “Esports is a phenomenon that continues to grow in popularity, with fans that can rival those at any major sporting event in their enthusiasm and energy. Our Priceless platform is built around connecting with people through their passions. We are excited about the experiences and benefits we can bring to the world’s largest esport - both in-game and to the millions of League of Legends fans that watch and attend the tournaments each year.”

The 2018 season is nearly over, so the first event that Mastercard will sponsor will be the 2018 World Championship, which begins in October. The company is working to give League of Legends fans a number of special opportunities, such as behind the scenes tours and VIP seats. Riot games’ head of eSports was quick to praise the partnership, saying:

“We’re thrilled to team up with Mastercard on this groundbreaking partnership that will provide meaningful and long-term value to our fans. Mastercard is among the first of world-class brands to take such a big step into esports at the global level, and we’re proud to have them support League of Legends esports events alongside their other premier sports and entertainment sponsorships.”
