Marriott befriends protestors with cage-free eggs and vegan sandwiches

Five years ago, Marriott promised to ditch the crueller factory-farmed eggs that most hotel chains serve up. When they missed targets on that front three years ago, no one seemed to notice. At the beginning of this month, that changed, and protestors were lined up outside the company’s headquarters in Bethesda, Maryland. The outcome? A swift response from Marriott that it would be recommitting to its cage-free goals. And vegan sandwiches!

In a press release, Marriott said: “Marriott International is committed to sourcing 100% of our eggs (shell, liquid, and egg products) from cage-free sources throughout our global operations for all owned, managed and franchised properties by the end of 2025. This is part of a comprehensive set of goals under our Serve 360 sustainability & social impact platform.”

Marriott said its sustainability initiative will be active across the 6700 hotels in its 30 brands, and the company plans to start reporting “major progress” against these goals next year.

Protestors were ecstatic, and the campaign quickly became a celebration, with Marriott sending out chef-made vegan sandwiches. One protestor, Jon Camp, wrote on Facebook:

It’s not every day at the office that you’re protesting outside of the headquarters of a major hotel chain and the protest comes to an end due to the chain committing to a 100% global cage-free policy. And then the chef comes out with sandwiches and vegan hot chocolate to serve the protestors. But savour it when it happens. Congrats to everyone throughout the world who worked on this campaign.

Marriott is sensibly choosing to align itself with modern values, and taking the opportunity to do it as publicly as possible. In the long run, that bodes very well for the company’s many luxury brands.
