Assa Abloy’s Attack Resistant Openings win design award

Assa Abloy, the global market leader in physical security solutions including a range of doors, locks, safes, and more, is no stranger to industry awards. And now, it can add another to its list of successes. The Chicago Athenaeum Museum of Architecture and Design, in conjunction with the European Centre for Architecture, Art, Design, and Urban Studies, has presented Assa Abloy with a 2017 GOOD DESIGN award in the Building Materials category. The winning innovation was the company’s Attack Resistant Openings – a cost-effective solution to the unfortunate reality of armed assault.

Howard Schrier, director of specialty products at Assa Abloy, made the following comment to the press: “We’re honored to once again be recognized by the GOOD DESIGN™ jurists, who were charged with selecting cutting-edge, innovative building materials. The Attack Resistant Opening is a complete assembly intent on delaying access to an attacker and suppressing unauthorized entry until first responders are able to arrive and contain the situation.”

Attack Resistant Openings is an innovative solution to the increase in concern over armed attack in the home, at K-12 schools and colleges, offices, and places of worship. It’s cheaper than traditional bullet-proof options, but offers robust protection from attack. An Attack Resistant Opening comprises a high-security door, frame, hardware components from Assa Abloy, and protective glass from School Guard Glass. The company says that the solution can “withstand up to 90 shots of 7.62 mm ammunition followed by a brutal four-minute physical attack.” They used FBI Active Shooter guidelines to come to these conclusions.

Assa Abloy’s innovative solution is a great case of a company evolving to meet market demand – as the number of mass shootings has risen, and media coverage becomes increasingly difficult to ignore, sensible people across the world will, sadly, feel compelled to invest in suitable protective measures. However, this is more than a case of capitalization: Assa Abloy’s solution can bring top-class security at lower prices to a world that’s crying out for it – ultimately, that’s not just good for the company and its shareholders, but for everyone.
