Facebook wins social media battle to live stream Golden Globes
Social media giant Facebook has scored a significant win over rival Twitter – this year, the former company has secured exclusive rights to live stream the Golden Globes’ red carpet pre-show. Last year, that was an accolade that the latter company claimed. The announcement was made by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) and Dick Clark Productions on Tuesday, who said that the event would be available on Golden Globes’ Facebook page between 6 and 8 pm (eastern time).

The HFPA has promised to “leverage Facebook’s technologies” to craft the best experience possible for viewers – and that includes sourcing fans’ red carpet questions on the platform itself. Some of the things eager celeb-watchers can look forward to are 360-degree videos, backstage content, and Instagram Stories.
The inclusion of Instagram in the Facebook deal is likely what made it so appealing to the HFPA. On that platform, the Golden Globes have 230 million followers, whereas the event’s Facebook page has 2.3 million “likes”. The event, however, will not just be available to anyone who “likes” the Golden Globes page – it will be available to anyone on Facebook.
Sibyl Goldman, head of Facebook’s Entertainment Partnerships, released a statement, saying: “Facebook has had a long collaborative relationship with the entertainment community, and we’re thrilled to be able to extend that through our work with the Golden Globes. We always aim to create unique experiences which bring communities together, and partaking in the kickoff of award season in conjunction with the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, is a demonstration of our commitment to bring fans together through entertainment they enjoy.”
