Dufry brings Hudson brand to China

World-leading duty free retailer Dufry is bringing the Hudson Travel Essentials Convenience Bookstores to China, opening eight outlets in Chengdu airport. The airport saw more than 44 million travellers pass through last year alone, and the travel sector in China – although already enormous – is still expanding. This tentative expansion into the east is Dufry’s first step in a bigger plan to introduce the Hudson brand into China, where they expect to see a significant growth in the volume of travellers over the next few years.

All of the new Hudson outlets will be in Terminal 2 of the airport, and are being opened in conjunction with Hudson Bright Power – a joint venture between Dufry and Bright Power Beijing. Bright Power Beijing operates a number of bookshops in China, and Dufry is looking at a bigger presence in the country. Globally, Dufry has over 2,200 travel retail stores in 64 countries.

Vice general manager of Chngdu Airport, Ming Kang, thanked the brand for choosing Chengdu as a venue for Hudson’s launch in China.

Andrea Belardini, Dufry’s CEO for Asia, Middle East and Australia, said:

“With its remarkable number of passengers, Chengdu is the ideal starting point to further grow in China, which is a very attractive market for us and where we see a considerable growth potential with our convenience concept.

“Besides the Hudson convenience stores, we are also able to offer our landlords a complete range of retail formats and solutions, from typical core categories to multi-brand category formats such as sunglasses, fashion watches, electronic, leisure wear to name a few.”
