Competitive video gaming – or eSports, as it is also known – is one of the hottest trends in the entertainment world at the moment. The video games industry is huge, with revenue that dwarfs the global box office and music industries combined, and over 2.2 billion participants. However, it is also divisive: video games tend to be a millennial-and-younger proposition, which means if you’re over 40, you may well not realize how fundamentally video games are changing the entertainment landscape. eSports is shaping up to be a key component in that transformation, and it’s one that no investor should be ignorant of.

eSports is still in its infancy, relatively speaking. Competitive video gaming has been “a thing” since the 90s, but back then it was a niche interest in an already niche sector. Today, hundreds of millions of people watch competitive video gaming every day. Sponsors, as well as fans and players, are taking note: this decade will see eSports sponsorship, advertising, media rights, merchandising, and ticket revenue, exceed $1 billion for the first time.
Investors should also be aware that serious money is being pumped into the nascent industry. Companies like Amazon, Coca-Cola and Walt Disney, have all seen which way the wind is blowing and started investing.
