Compass Group UK launches barista academy to increase coffee quality
Compass Group UK is launching its first barista academy to raise the quality of its coffee. Aspirants can apply to earn a “coffee diploma” and the accompanying title of master barista by displaying “a focus on technical skill, consistency, and quality, in a series of testing trials.” The shortlisted finalists will then face a judging panel of external experts.
Compass’s master baristas will then be able to work towards an industry standard qualification – the Specialty Coffee Association Diploma in Coffee, which is designed to proliferate best practise across the industry.
Louise Pilkington, Compass Group UK and Ireland’s marketing director, said: “Starting the process of launching our first ever Barista Academy is an important step for us in continuing our coffee journey. Establishing this group of hugely talented and skilled individuals, we will be able to spread their knowledge around the business, further raising the standard and profile of our baristas and our coffee offers.”
She continued: “It’s a great opportunity to bring together all the great work we’re doing in the hot beverage category and show off some of our talented people who take our coffee credentials to the next level.”
Coffee consumption continues to rise in the UK, and it is the world’s most popular drink. The luxury coffee market is evolving, and taking a bigger part of the pie – meaning that expert baristas may well become a popular fixture at coffee shops around the country.
Stephen Lovegrove, the company’s UK & Ireland head of business excellence, added: “We have some fantastic baristas in the business who complement the quality of our coffee offers. The launch of our barista academy brings this work together and celebrates this talent. We can’t wait for the trials to begin to decide our master baristas.”
