Compass Group puts women front and centre in new HR program

Compass Group UK and Ireland is partnering with popular parenting forum Mumsnet and training provider Corndel to make it easier for mothers to get back into the workplace. The company is keen to embrace positive, ethical, social values – while, at the same time, retaining access to trained staff in a contracting labour market. According to HR director Donna Catley, this new initiative achieves both goals.

In a recent interview, Catley explained: “Women can find it challenging to return to work and balance motherhood in any business. Through our new partnership with Mumsnet and Corndel we want to do everything we can to support women to return to any of the roles we have in the business. We believe we’re the first company in the UK with such a support partnership.”

“The partnership will support those returning from maternity leave with a tailored development programme, designed with Mumsnet and Corndel, which will help them move into management and leadership positions. We hope the partnership will be powerful, as Mumsnet is the UK’s largest network for parents. They have a huge amount of knowledge around returning to work.”

Catley added that Compass Group had other initiatives in place to champion women’s participation in the business, including a programme to help “women progress into management and leadership positions.” She added that the company already has “a significant proportion” of women in senior roles, but was eager to avoid becoming complacent in regards to “female progression within the business.”

These values undoubtedly play well with modern workers and consumers – but they could also give Compass an advantage over rivals when it comes to staffing. Particularly if Brexit leads to labour issues in the UK. Catley said: “The reality is that if we don’t provide the right conditions, we won’t be able to access all the talent that is out there in the UK.”
