Compass Group goes green
Earlier this month, global catering titan Compass Group made an announcement that is sure to play well amongst their more ethically concerned clients: the company is pursuing sustainably sourced salmon in the Mid-Atlantic region of the U.S. And this contract is just the first – Compass Group says it has “aggressive plans” to roll out contracts across the country.

The company said that the new salmon contracted for “is at least equivalent to the Seafood Watch yellow Good Alternative recommendation and is certified by the Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC).” This is a major commitment to treat the oceans with respect, and will no doubt prove popular amongst Millennial consumers, who are generally thought to be more environmentally aware than their predecessors. Adding more detail to the plan, Compass Group’s USA director of sustainability, Julia Jordan, said:
“We’ve been waiting on a farmed contract for a decade now, because there hasn’t been a large volume of what we deem sustainable farmed salmon in the marketplace.”
Peter Redmond, the vice president for market development at ASC also released a statement praising the group for its latest contract:
“The ASC is proud to be associated with Compass Group through this announcement. Compass became one of the pioneers in aquaculture sustainability with their Seafood Watch commitment. This further commitment to source ASC certified salmon drives these goals and delivers firm assurances to their customers that when you buy farm-raised product from Compass, it has been raised to the highest social and environmental standards.”
