Baidu takes the fight to cybercriminals

A gang of “hackers for hire” has attempted to infiltrate Baidu’s networks and steal its driverless car technology. Luckily, Baidu takes its cybersecurity seriously, and the hackers’ attempts were foiled. But the company isn’t taking it lying down.

Baidu is supporting ‘white hat’ hackers in training (cybersecurity experts who apply hacking technoiques to secure systems as a pressure testing exercise), and teaming up with rivals Tencent and Alibaba to provide a united front against cybercrime.

Baidu’s head of cybersecurity, Ma Jie, told reporters that the company didn’t know who was behind the crime:

“It’s very difficult to know who employs them to do that, but we know someone tried to hire someone in the underground market to steal from us.”

This unfortunate incident is not the first time Baidu has considered cybersecurity risks. As one may imagine, given that Baidu is one of the ‘Big 3’ Chinese internet companies, it’s a subject close to the company’s heart. And it has to be: Baidu lives with the constant threat of cybercriminals trying to break into its systems.

The company supports a number of cybersecurity initiatives, including Blue Lotus – a team of white hat hackers working out of Tsinghua University. Ma said:

“If we can help students find the right way, that means less enemies in the future.”

The company is also partnering with competitors Alibaba and Tencent – the other 2 members of China’s ‘Big 3’ internet companies – to fight back against cybercrime. Speaking about this relationship, Ma told reporters:

“The underground industry is getting stronger so we must help each other against the whole underground industry. We’re not enemies, they are the enemy.”

Dominion holds Baidu, as well as a number of other companies with cybersecurity interests, in its Global Trends Ecommerce Fund.
