Amazon speaks Spanish in US

There are 41 million native Spanish speakers in the US, and a further 11.6 million bilingual Spanish speakers. So Amazon’s decision to cater to its growing customer base within this demographic is pretty self-explanatory: the company is adding Spanish language options to its U.S. site for obvious reasons. It’s the first time the company has added a new language since its inception more than 20 years ago.

A spokeswoman for the company told CNET:

"Customers will be able to shop, browse and search for millions of products, view their shopping cart, and place orders in Spanish on and through the Amazon Mobile Shopping app. We will continue to roll out the shopping experience over the coming weeks. More and more customers should expect to see the option to shop in Spanish soon."

The company already has Spanish language websites in Spain and Mexico, of course, but by adding the language to its U.S. site, it is sending a powerful message of inclusion to the country’s many Spanish-speaking immigrants – one that, given some of the promises made by America’s new president, will likely resonate.

In a further nod to the value of this demographic, Amazon has announced that it will be starting its Prime subscription service in Mexico.
