Amadeus IT moves closer to smart airports with ICM Airport Technics acquisition
IT giant Amadeus, the company responsible for the back-end systems that power much of the travel industry, is moving closer to its dream of smart airports with a recent acquisition. ICM Airport Technics is an Australian provider of “passenger automation and self-service bag drop solutions” for airports and airlines, and provides a crucial component in the design of smart airports – airports that are defined by connectivity and automation, and will see multiple platforms integrated into one overarching system.

The acquisition, which was announced in March, closed last month – as a result, Amadeus is now the proud owner of a company that serves approximately 25 airports and has processed more than 75 million bags worldwide over the last decade.
The larger company says it plans to integrate ICM’s systems with its other tech solutions, letting it design, configure, implement, operate and support all airports systems that have a hand in managing customers’ baggage from start-to-finish.
In a statement, Amadeus Airport executive vice president, Bruno Spada, said: “Combining ICM and Amadeus’s advanced technology expertise will provide an open platform for airport innovation, and will act as a trampoline for growth for Amadeus and ICM in the coming years ahead.”
ICM will continue to operate as a stand-alone division within Amadeus’s Airport IT division, which Spada heads up. Speaking back in March about the value ICM could add both to his division and the company as a whole, Spada said:
“By combining Amadeus’ and ICM’s software and hardware capabilities, by accelerating and introducing more self-service options, and by using the power of biometrics, this deal announced today will ensure that together we can deliver better journeys for passengers in the future. I believe this deal will also accelerate our future innovation capabilities. Combining ICM and Amadeus’ advanced technology expertise will provide an open platform for airport innovation, and will act as a trampoline for growth for Amadeus and ICM in the coming years ahead.”
