Activision Blizzard proves its eSports dominance with first Overwatch League Grand Final

Just last week, we wrote about Activision Blizzard’s enviable position in the fast-growing eSports world. At the beginning of June, the video game publisher and developer has proved us right, selling out tickets to the biggest ever eSports championship in Brooklyn, New York.

The first ever Overwatch League Grand Finals will take place over July 27 – 28 at Barclays Center, and Activison has already sold out the more than 20,000 tickets that were available. It took the company just two weeks to sell these tickets, and the show it’s selling them for will be the biggest eSports event ever slated at the Barclays Center. Perhaps no surprise, given that the Overwatch League is “the world’s first major global, city-based eSports league.”

Nate Nanzer, the League’s commissioner, said: “We knew the Overwatch League had amazing, enthusiastic fans, but this is something else. We’re incredibly excited to play to a packed house at one of the world’s premier sports and entertainment arenas. With the help of our broadcast team, our partners, and Barclays Center, we’re going to put on a first-class show for everyone in attendance, and for the millions more who will be watching online.”

Keith Sheldon, the executive vice president of BSE Global, which books shows for the Barclays Center, added: “We are thrilled with the momentum behind the Overwatch League Grand Finals. Our goal at Barclays Center is to be the destination for major esports events. That vision is taking shape as a result of a great partnership with the talented team behind the Overwatch League.”
