Skyworks Solutions makes big bet on small cells

Small cells let mobile operators support a higher volume of mobile data traffic – and this means that they could be critical to the future of technology. Cisco says that mobile data traffic will rise sevenfold between 2016 and 2021, due to the fact that by this time there will be 11.6 billion mobile devices connected to the internet. Skyworks Solutions is one of the companies preparing for this immediate future.

Skyworks is looking to capitalize on the opportunity to provide powerful infrastructural enhancements to existing networks over the next four years. Small cells could be immensely useful in rural areas – which have often lagged behind urban ones – and they could aid decongestion.

This latter concern will become paramount as more and more people use streaming video on demand services and social media directly from hand held devices. They could also be applied sensibly to areas of temporary high concentration such as big concerts and sporting events, where many thousands of people will all suddenly be using mobile data for a limited time.

According to leading market research company Technavio, small cells are so useful that the market for them could more than double in just a few years – from $4.50 billion in 2016 to $10.65 billion by 2021. Skyworks has been able to sign contracts with big players like SpiderCloud Wireless who, in turn, supply names like Verizon and Vodafone. This puts it in a great position to capture the growth in the small cell market.
