Meet Richemont’s new smartwatch

When the Apple Watch debuted, many people thought it spelled the end for the Swiss watch industry. That did not come to pass, but a growing suspicion that smartwatches might grow at the expense of traditional timepieces lingers on. Global luxury company Richemont, famous for its Swiss watches, amongst other things, is not going to be left behind: the company will be making its first smartwatch available later this spring.

Richemont’s luxury watch brand Montblanc has announced the imminent release of the Montblanc Summit – a smartwatch that combines the customizability of a smartwatch with the timeless elegance of a traditional Swiss watch. The Summit will be available in four different case materials and styles, and have over 300 wearable combinations with digital displays and strap materials. The overall design of the watch hearkens back to the company’s beautiful 1858 collection – but make no mistake, this is a fully-fledged smartwatch.

It will be powered by Android Wear 2.0, the latest iteration of Google’s operating system for smartwatches, and contain a Qualcomm Snapdragon Wear 2100 processor, one of the most powerful processors on the market. The Summit, unlike some of its competitors, will also be fully compatible with both Android and iOa devices.

The Summit will include all the innovations one would expect from a smartwatch: touchscreens, heart rate monitors, light sensors, a microphone for voice commands, and more. It will also have access to over thousands of apps on the Google Play Store.

The Montblanc Summit will be available from May, with a suggested retail price of $890. Could this be the product that finally sees traditional watchmakers silence the Apple Watch touting naysayers?
