Indian YouTube to build on site’s popularity on continent

India is a vast and powerful emerging market, but it has more than its share of challenges to overcome – amongst them, sketchy internet connections. Despite this problem, YouTube is a big hit on the continent: according to one of the company’s product leads, there are 180 million mobile users in India, and the site’s watch time had climbed 400%, year-on-year, at its most recent measurement.

That’s why the company is making a new app, YouTube Go, for Indian users, enabling them to watch videos even when they lose internet connectivity. After being announced last September, the app is currently in its beta phase, and will be rolled out to a larger audience next year.

An announcement from Google said:

“Today, after months of expanded testing and refinement, we are happy to announce that we are making the beta version of YouTube Go available for download on the Google Play Store in India. The app is designed to be offline first and improve the experience of watching videos on a slower network; it gives you more control over data usage, by providing choice and transparency into the amount of data spent on streaming or saving videos.

“We will gradually roll out YouTube Go to more and more people over the next few months getting their feedback and improving the product before launching it widely early next year.”
